Now, we aren’t talking about going for a trot in Richmond Park or a picnic along the Thames here. We’re speaking about the incredible outdoor diversity that we have right on our doorstep that many people in the UK don’t experience. Believe it or not, there are heaps of national parks in the UK that are just waiting to be explored.

So, here are some of the best outdoor places in the UK for you to consider for your next getaway.

Dartmoor

Dartmoor is the largest open space in southern England and it offers hundreds of exhilarating options to explore its wildlands. It’s a firm favourite for those who love to be active in the outdoors and there’s something for everyone. If you’re looking for something a little more challenging, then you can tackle the highest tors on foot or explore the steep hills by bike. Then there’s hacking the moors by horseback, kayaking through beautiful landscapes, and even a relaxing day of fishing for those with more sedate hobbies.

The Pembrokeshire Coast is made up of nearly 260 miles of some of the UK’s most beautiful natural habitat. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path, at 186,4 miles, has been voted among the best hiking routes in the world. With stunning headlands, creeks, bays, estuaries, lakes, lagoons, wooded valleys, coves, and beaches to explore, it is a nature lover’s dream. There are also a number of historically important sites, such as Iron Age Hill, where Henry Tudor landed his forces in 1485. There are also seven National Nature reserves along the way.

The coast is a Marine Nature Reserve and offers some of the best outdoor sports activities in the UK. Riding, surfing, kayaking, bouldering, climbing, cycling, walking, and coasteering are just some of the amazing activities to choose from.

Yorkshire Dales

Yorkshire Dales National Park is unlike any other within the UK. It has picturesque valleys, beautiful moorlands and meadows, the cleanest of wild rivers and streams, miles of dry stone walls, and unbelievable limestone formations that make up a kaleidoscope of waterfalls, caves, and caverns.

There are tons of amazing ways to see them all, whether that’s a slow walk, a hike, a bike, or even a trip on a heritage railway. An activity that you simply have to do in Yorkshire Dales, however, is undoubtedly a guided caving expedition. You’ll be taken through a winding maze of beautiful cave formations that will leave you breathless.

The Broads

At just 45,5 square miles, the Broads is the smallest national park in the country, but what it lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in beauty. This is the perfect place for those who simply love water. There are around 124 miles of free-flowing waterways, 63 lakes, and seven rivers within this small park. Reed beds, beautiful woodlands, and marshland make up most of the park and it is home to roughly a quarter of Britain’s rarest animal and insect species like the Norfolk hawker dragonfly and the swallowtail butterfly.

You can cycle, sail, walk, boat, and kayak around the park to get the best out of the stunning landscape on offer.

Cairngorms

If it’s dramatic mountain landscapes that you’re after, then Cairngorms is the perfect park for you. It is the largest national park in the UK and home to the breathtaking Ben Macdui peak. It also contains a third of the UK land space. A quarter of Scotland’s native forest can be found here, and so can many of Britain’s cleanest and wildest fishing rivers.

Birders will be right at home here, with golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and ospreys frequently sighted in the mountain ranges. Reindeer, roe deer, mountain hare, and red squirrels also make their homes on these moorlands and in these woodlands.

There is so much to see and do in this majestic slice of paradise, and it is so big that at times you will feel like you’re completely alone in the natural world.
