How to make perfect pancakes and fit in a game!

Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Pancake Day, is nearly upon us. On Tuesday 25th February, households up and down the country will be getting their whisks, aprons and pans at the ready for a pancake feast!

Traditionally recognised for religious reasons – the day of consuming all your ingredients before the start of abstinence during Lent the following day, Ash Wednesday – these days it’s celebrated by people from all walks of life. It’s a chance to cook, eat and be together, with family and friends. And have some flippin’ fun along the way!

Pancakes are tricky customers, and even the pros get it wrong from time to time. The first one or two are nearly always write-offs (but still taste good for nibbling on) and either end up a soggy mess or burnt to a crisp. Once you’re in full swing, it’s pretty easy to turn out a good batch of golden, even beauties. The key is letting the batter stand for a good while after whisking, adding some melted butter to the mix and getting the pan to a nice hot temperature before you get sizzling.

The next thing to think about is toppings. Are you a classic lemon and sugar lover? What about a fruit-filled jobbie? Why not go overboard with melted chocolate, slices of banana and whipped cream? If there’s a time to indulge, this is it.

The trouble is staying focused on the task in hand. Can you stay the course or is a game of Mecca bingo always at the back of your mind? Maybe you’re a multi-tasking genius and can alternate between tossing and spinning on the slots? Win win! If you’re not, you’re probably going to end up with more misses than hits, but hey, it’s all part of the entertainment!

For successes on both fronts, why not cook up your batch of perfect pancakes, keep them warm in the oven, have your toppings at the ready and then sneak in a game or two, before the troops have been rallied?

OR, you could totally cheat. Just buy some pre-made pancakes and stick them in the microwave. Meaning….more time for one of our awesome games without the worry of a smoke-filled kitchen. Make Pancake Day extra special this year with tons of fab prizes to be won. Yep, you’d batter believe it!
